The grand old lady of painting

Maria Lassnig is one of the most influential Austrian artists post 1945, whose painterly work has received enormous interest in recent years, but also outside her native land with retrospective exhibitions in Munich, Cologne, London and Cincinnati. The subdued palette, representations of figures and the body ranging from the fragmentary to the seemly sculptural, bizarre themes and idiosyncratic visual artistic perspectives are characteristic of her work, which re-introduced a particularly feminist-inspired view of art history into the discourse. Now, however, the tide has turned for the Carinthian, there is finally some movement in the status of the artist's artist, not least because of the forthcoming retrospective at the Deichtorhallen from June – 21 September 2013 which had previously been shown at the Neue Galerie Graz.
This book, edited by Andrea Madesta, was originally published for the exhibition »Body Images« (body awarness painting) in Klagenfurt in Spring 2006 and was sold out immediately at that time. We have now succeeded in conjunction with the exhibition in Hamburg to procure the remaining stock in Carinthia and make it available once more, so we can now offer it as a special edition. The extremely attractive volume with a comprehensive view of the artist’s overall oeuvre is an excellent introduction and supplement to the retrospective in Hamburg.
