Visionary

In the space of over three years, Patricia Bucher has created an imposing 360° panorama of an everlasting battle fought down the centuries. The young Swiss artist has been awarded the prestigious Manor art prize and will be exhibiting her 30 metres long by 60 cm high work, which has been drawn and coloured on a computer, at the Kunstmuseum Luzern in a circular building measuring approximately 10 metres in diameter. From over 2,000 representations of war in a variety of media, such as painting, drawing, reportage, computer games and comics, she has generated unique, tumultuous scenes that spill over into one another and in which the most varied ethnic groups, fighting styles, and weaponry from past centuries violently collide.
Panoramic images have a history in Lucerne – the city with an art museum, the front door of which opens onto the unique and towering alpine panorama along Lake Lucerne, and where visitors already flock to see the Bourbaki Panorama and the Gornergrat Diorama in the Alpineum. If the main area focus here is the landscape, by contrast Bucher’s composition depicts the history of humanity as a never-ending story of armed conflict congealed in a vortex-like motion.
