The aesthetic potential of things

This unique exhibition catalogue includes the first comprehensive presentation of works by Meuser (b. in 1947) who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1968 until 1972. Meuser took part in 1992 in the documenta IX, and during the same year he was apppointed professor at the State Academy for Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Found objects form the starting point for the majority of Meuser’s sculptures, wall objects, paintings and installative works. Meuser adorns massive constructional elements, such as T-girders, gratings, shelving systems and metal plates with predominantly monochrome paint and orders the individual objects into equally well-conceived if apparently random compositions. Eschewing figurative depiction, Meuser’s works investigate the aesthetic potential of things beyond the their manifest function, as well as the symbolic nature of industrially manufactured forms. The catalogue assembles works from the late 1970s to the present day, amongst them many artworks from international collections. The presentation of installation photographs of these artworks will be prepared in close collaboration with the artist and in consideration of the special architectural properties of the Kunsthalle. This catalogue is since a couple of years actually a comprehensive publication.
