Monotypes

Mira Schendel (1919-1988) can probably be described as one of the most important and at the same time most productive post-war artists in Latin America. Drawing, painting and sculpture form the basis of her enormous and unique oeuvre, in which she deals with questions of existence, language and meaning. Directly from the artist's archive, this book now brings together for the first time a selection of monotypes that formed an essential part of Mira Schendel's daily work practice. Focussing entirely on the ideas of writing, invisibility and the ephemeral, these monotypes, facsimiled on thin paper, give an immediate impression of the Brazilian artist's artistic aesthetic. Taisa Palhares from the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, co-curator of the retrospective shown at the Tate Modern from September 2013 to January 2014, provides a concise introduction to Mira Schendel's work in her text.
