In his projects, which at first glance appear heterogeneous, Philip Topolovac analyses the conditions under which we perceive reality and questions the meaning we attach to what we perceive. What is real? What is historically conditioned? What do we judge by its value? Is our world really the way we have learnt to imagine it? The creation of art is a subject that, for the artist, takes place primarily in the mind of the viewer - perception as projection and interpretation is a central theme in many works. The aim of this publication is therefore to capture the central theme of Topolovac's work. The world as a model, the artwork as a prop - this central aspect of his work is also reflected in the latest series of \"Prophets\" (2025), in which \"ecstatic\" facial impressions of baroque clay models for figures of saints are moulded into lifelike head models made of polystyrene and modelling clay. As a sculpture, he has also recreated a concrete column (2023) from the Berghain beer garden that has been converted into a fountain. In recent years, Philip Topolovac has also succeeded in building up an extensive collection of war-damaged objects that he has rescued from building pits in Berlin. The many post-war wastelands along the Wall and in the divided rest of the city have been built on at full speed since reunification. The property boom only opens a small window into the dramatic past, from which evidence of Berlin's extensive destruction during the war continues to emerge. In the process, the contaminated sites earmarked for disposal poke out of the ground as if from the city's subconscious. The work \"Orpheus\", a weathered head that can be seen as a floating sculpture in a Berlin lake, comes from a similar context - although it is clearly more dreamy - and arias from the Gluck opera \"Orfeo ed Euridice\" (1762) can be heard at different intervals. Topolovac always fuses tragedy from myth and reality into surreal conundrums and thus symbolises the genesis of the book.<\/p>\n
