Por muy glamurosos que se presenten los esp\u00edas en la cultura popular, la informaci\u00f3n que recogen en acciones encubiertas es socialmente explosiva. Mientras que en el pasado los individuos o los Estados eran espiados por los gobiernos nacionales, en tiempos de comunicaci\u00f3n digital los ciudadanos hacen p\u00fablicos los secretos de Estado, o los informantes denuncian el espionaje a la poblaci\u00f3n por parte de su propio gobierno. En sus obras, los artistas contempor\u00e1neos abordan aspectos del espionaje como la vigilancia, la paranoia, la amenaza y el camuflaje, la criptograf\u00eda, la manipulaci\u00f3n, la sangre fr\u00eda y la traici\u00f3n.
