Melanie Smith, n\u00e9e en 1965 \u00e0 Poole, en Grande-Bretagne, vit aujourd'hui \u00e0 Mexico. Avec ses installations, ses peintures, ses travaux vid\u00e9o et ses objets, elle aborde un large \u00e9ventail de questions de perception, en particulier des th\u00e8mes sociaux et philosophiques pertinents. Elle a fortement impressionn\u00e9 le public lors de sa pr\u00e9sentation \u00e0 la Biennale de Venise en 2011, qu'elle a reprise sous une forme nettement plus \u00e9labor\u00e9e lors de sa premi\u00e8re pr\u00e9sentation institutionnelle en Allemagne \u00e0 la Villa Merkel \u00e0 Esslingen en \u00e9t\u00e9 2012. C'est ainsi qu'elle a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9, au rez-de-chauss\u00e9e de la villa classique sp\u00e9cialement am\u00e9nag\u00e9 \u00e0 cet effet, le travail vid\u00e9o \"Xilitla\", qui a pour th\u00e8me le parc de sculptures \"Las Pozas de Xilitla\" cr\u00e9\u00e9 au milieu du 20e si\u00e8cle par l'artiste anglais Edward James dans la for\u00eat tropicale mexicaine - un paysage luxuriant rempli d'architectures biomorphiques et de sculptures en b\u00e9ton. Lorsque des hommes portent des miroirs de la taille de leur corps dans l'image, la sc\u00e8ne semble m\u00eame surr\u00e9aliste, car les images des miroirs s'entrecroisent avec des moments de mouvements cin\u00e9matographiques et soulignent ainsi les \u00e9l\u00e9ments oniriques d'une \"symbiose architecture-paysage\" ; en m\u00eame temps, on jette des ponts avec les jeux de miroirs en plein air, tels que nous les connaissons par exemple du pionnier am\u00e9ricain du Land Art Robert Smithson. Melanie Smith nous pr\u00e9sente en outre une peinture des surfaces et des \u00e9tats processuels, o\u00f9 la facticit\u00e9 de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 picturale purement picturale semble osciller \u00e0 la limite de la repr\u00e9sentation ; on a toujours l'impression, image apr\u00e8s image, d'\u00eatre au d\u00e9but de quelque chose de nouveau.<\/p>\n
