Sur huit tableaux ind\u00e9pendants d'une longueur totale de plus de soixante-dix m\u00e8tres, Saul Steinberg a cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour le pavillon am\u00e9ricain de l'exposition universelle de 1958 \u00e0 Bruxelles un collage imposant sur l'American Way of Life, qu'il a tout simplement appel\u00e9 \"The Americans\". Pour la premi\u00e8re fois, le mus\u00e9e Ludwig de Cologne pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 nouveau l'ensemble complet - compl\u00e9t\u00e9 par d'autres dessins, collages et illustrations de magazines.
\nSaul Steinberg, n\u00e9 en Roumanie en 1914 et d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 New York en 1999, a commenc\u00e9 des \u00e9tudes d'architecture \u00e0 Milan en 1932, puis a tent\u00e9 d'\u00e9migrer aux \u00c9tats-Unis en 1941 avec un passeport dont il avait lui-m\u00eame falsifi\u00e9 le tampon, avant d'\u00eatre finalement expuls\u00e9 vers la R\u00e9publique dominicaine. De l\u00e0, il a envoy\u00e9 ses dessins au \"New Yorker\", pour finalement r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 entrer aux \u00c9tats-Unis. \"The Americans\" est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme le point culminant du travail artistique de Saul Steinberg, qui l'a surtout rendu c\u00e9l\u00e8bre en tant qu'illustrateur talentueux du \"New Yorker\". En 1976, une vue labyrinthique de la ville de New York a fait la couverture du magazine du m\u00eame nom qui a rendu Steinberg c\u00e9l\u00e8bre. Le livre ne documente pas seulement \"The Americans\" de mani\u00e8re exhaustive avec d'excellentes illustrations, mais montre aussi pour la premi\u00e8re fois de mani\u00e8re impressionnante le m\u00e9lange des m\u00e9dias les plus divers - dessin, photographie, motifs de papier peint, papier d'emballage et fragments de bande dessin\u00e9e.
