Jan Holthoff a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 avec Gerhard Merz, l'un des principaux artistes de l'art post-minimaliste, et avec Helmut Federle, l'un des peintres qui pense la peinture de mani\u00e8re radicale en termes d'\u00e9nergie et de retenue formelle. En 2008, Jan Holthoff a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 avec Herbert Brandl en tant que ma\u00eetre-\u00e9l\u00e8ve. Les suggestions qu'il a re\u00e7ues de ces trois artistes l'ont conduit \u00e0 d\u00e9finir son propre objectif : \"ren\u00e9gocier la peinture\". \"Ma peinture est gestuelle, abstraite et processuelle, la complexit\u00e9 varie\", dit-il. Et la formulation est pr\u00e9cise, car celui qui parcourt ces tableaux, comme par exemple dans l'exposition \u00e0 la Kulturkirche de Duisbourg, d'o\u00f9 proviennent les prises de vue des installations spatiales, voit que les toiles n'ont en fait rien de s\u00e9riel, les tableaux de 2024 sont plut\u00f4t con\u00e7us de mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s r\u00e9duite, presque contemplative, occupant tout l'espace dans leur combinaison de peinture de champs de couleurs et d'expressivit\u00e9. En 2025, Jan Holthoff fait \u00e9clater ce syst\u00e8me, travaille moins avec la transparence, mais utilise des surfaces opaques isol\u00e9es qui r\u00e9sistent au chaos int\u00e9rieur comme des signaux d'arr\u00eat. C'est de la tr\u00e8s bonne peinture, qui th\u00e9matise une dialectique de l'impression, de la variabilit\u00e9 et de sa possible disparition, une disparition que presque toute l'humanit\u00e9 vit
