The Belly of Flanders!

In their inimitable virtuoso style, the pair of Cologne-based, artist brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias have opened a new chapter in their creative oeuvre. If hitherto we had been witness to their adaptation of Art Brut, Surrealism and Constructivism into a revival of the woodcut determined by the keywords »trash« and »crossover«, they have now turned their eyes towards an area as pictorially formidable as it is richly historical: the still life. As has been the case with all other publications, they document the spatial composition of their exhibition once again using installation views, but they also individually photograph all the new motifs, which are themselves surprising in many ways. Alongside pieces of cake or still lifes from the hunt, we witness the classical floral, vanitas or momento mori motifs that penetrate deep into the artistic landscape and belly of Flanders.
