Of uprisings and escapes

Tanja Boukal's (*1976) works focus on people and their interactions in social contexts. The artist is not interested in the outward impression that people usually make, but in what they are capable of when they are confronted with extraordinary situations: How do they arrive at solutions, what strategies do they pursue and, last but not least, how much willpower do they have to muster in order to achieve their goals? And: Is this also part of their joy in life, do they pursue their happiness on their own or do they seek it together with others? For Tanja Boukal, everything starts with the concept of human dignity; in her work, she focuses on people who would otherwise remain in the shadows. These are often women who combine traditional craftsmanship with creativity and a zest for life. Tanja Boukal wants to give people space for their activities of this kind, they should be remembered by the viewer by creating something meaningful; but the people portrayed themselves also benefit in their self-image by contributing to Tanja Boukal's art - a humanistic win-win situation that in this case really deserves its name.
