Über dieses Buch

See clouds

Clouds have - without us realising it - an elementary meaning for us. We inscribe our wishes, hopes and fears in their fleetingness and indeterminate diversity. The artistic "discovery" of the cloud has run parallel to its growing significance in the natural sciences and humanities since the Middle Ages, and increasingly so in the 19th century. In the context of theoretical endeavours in the 20th century, the cloud developed into a model for grasping the complexity of contemporary conditions. It came to symbolise a networked information architecture, geopolitical relationships and new concepts of space. It is well known that clouds do not respect borders. The exhibition and book "Clouds and the Cloud" deals with the phenomenon of the cloud from a perspective that allows us to look beyond the usual images of clouds. Incorporating a wide variety of media, the contributions range from the artistic translation of the natural motif to the technical infrastructure of clouds and their affects. The works presented combine ecological, socio-political, economic and technological aspects. At the centre of the exhibition is the current examination of various concepts, materialities and functions of the cloud(s).
