The self-portrait

The self-portrait is a genuinely European genre of the visual arts and a genre of the highest topicality: whether it is a late medieval portrait in a mirror, proud self-representation in the Baroque period or the depiction of the sensitive self in Romanticism - one's own identity in the image opens up a range of themes that extends to the phenomenon of today's selfie, shared millions of times on the worldwide web. The exhibition and catalogue were conceived in an international collaboration between the museums in Karlsruhe, Lyon and Edinburgh. A compilation of over 100 works from their collections (paintings, drawings, prints and videos) demonstrates the diverse forms of human self-questioning and self-portrayal.
