For the first time, the exhibition and catalogue provide a comprehensive overview of the wide range of sculptural work in Switzerland since 1945, with 230 works by 150 artists from all parts of the country. It begins with the advanced positions of the immediate post-war period, such as those of Jean Arp, Max Bill, Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier, but also presents "traditionalists" such as Karl Geiser and Remo Rossi, who were still decisive for the Swiss art scene at the time. From the post-war period, the differentiation of the diverse trends in art of the 1960s is then traced. Parallel to the pronounced development of iron sculpture, the new avant-gardes emerged at this time, such as "Nouveau Réalisme", which was decisively characterised by Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle and Daniel Spoerri. The plurality of styles continued to increase in the 1970s: construction, abstraction, conceptual dematerialisation, expressivity or inwardness - everything was now possible until, with an initial peak in the 1980s, the everyday broke into art and Fischli / Weiss or, subsequently, Sylvie Fleury conquered the international art scene with their works. Two different attitudes can be observed in the youngest generation: the (postmodern) desire to create out of the liberating realisation that all forms of sculpture have existed before, and a new interest in the material and its craftsmanship.
