Schweizer Skulptur seit 1945

Exhibition and catalogue provide for the first time a comprehensive overview of the diverse sculptural output in Switzerland since 1945. With 230 works by 150 artists from every part of the country, an arc full of tension is drawn. The prelude is formed by the advanced positions of the immediate post-war period, for instance by Jean Arp, Max Bill, Alberto Giacometti or Germaine Richier, but “traditionalists” such as Karl Geiser or Remo Rossi, who at the time were still decisive for the Swiss art scene, are presented as well. From the post-war period onwards, the differentiation of the manifold tendencies of the art of the 1960s is then traced. Parallel to the pronounced development of iron sculpture, the new avant-gardes emerged at that time, among them “Nouveau Réalisme,” which was decisively shaped by Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle and Daniel Spoerri. The plurality of styles increased ever further in the 1970s: construction, abstraction, conceptual dematerialisation, expressiveness or inwardness – everything was now possible, until, with a first climax in the 1980s, the everyday broke into art and Fischli / Weiss, and subsequently Sylvie Fleury, conquered the international art scene with their works. In the youngest generation two different attitudes can be observed: the (postmodern) delight in creating that springs from the liberating realisation that every form of sculpture has already existed at some point, and a new interest in material and in working it by hand.
