She succeeds in transforming a simple wire into a curved line in space, uniting a ball of tensioning straps in the dynamic and complex interplay of shapes, colours and textures of a cotton net. Playful and austere, her works unfold a dynamic in space that can be associated with the fullness of movement of the Baroque period as well as with a minimalist decision to dispense with everything unnecessary and trust in the possibilities of the material. Since the 1990s, the artist has roamed streets, building sites, industrial wastelands, factories and production plants in search of materials for her sculptures and wall objects. In the past, these sites were an Eldorado for procuring materials. Today, in the age of recycling, they sometimes resemble high-security wings, as the artist recently remarked in conversation. She recycles in a completely different way herself: metals, plastics, containers, wire and "stuff" all find their way into her work in the studio. They are talking relics from production, remnants that bear traces of use, as minimalist as they are beautiful, and Birgit Werres assembles them into objects in the room. Everything has a history and can also become something new in a new place.
