Two thoroughly good sorts – Harald Falckenberg and Thomas Olbricht both belong to the German collecting elite and never miss an opportunity to take a very personal stand with the art they prefer. Harald Falckenberg, as he says, has punk in his head, and Thomas Olbricht speaks of himself as a rocker. Both collectors thus unmistakably embody not only a new style; with their collecting of art they also want to establish direct communication, for the artists they collect see the value of their work partly in the pose of exaggeration and provocation; at times things get loud and raucous. The enjoyment of art should “leap out at you,” as Thomas Olbricht put it in the daily Die Welt. Now that the Deichtorhallen have, since 30 April 2011, been curating the Sammlung Falckenberg in Hamburg-Harburg in a cooperation, the collection is to play host to other collections again and again. A great gathering, then, with Jake & Dinos Chapman, Cattelan, Kippenberger, McCarthy, Meese and many others at the Deichtorhallen.
