Welcome to the dark side ...
The double presentation at the Villa Merkel in Esslingen of Astrid Nippoldt's filmic works with Hansjoerg Dobliar's painterly installations shows two positions that complement each other ideally, as they shake up the limits of the rational availability of the image in the succession of romantic traditions: Hansjoerg Dobliar's position, because he stretches his large overpaintings of magazine photos into darkly coloured constructions and forms cosmic-looking spaces with these seemingly crystalline structures. Astrid Nippoldt's position, because she steers cinematic pictorial spaces that tell of meaning and power through tragic-comic incidents into a skewed position that consistently reflects the absurdity of existence. The book, which features installation shots throughout, is logically conceived with this particular spatial effect in mind in the work of the two artists.
