The Sprengel Museum Hannover is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Bernhard and Margrit Sprengel donation and the 40th anniversary of the museum with ELEMENTARTEILE. The exhibition and collection catalogue ELEMENTARTEILE pose questions about art that are as simple as they are obvious, yet prove to be absolutely fundamental: What is art? What are works of art actually made of, what materials are used? What formal languages do they use? What reality(ies) do they refer to between figuration, abstraction and virtual worlds? What is art about, what stories does it tell, how does it reflect history? The impressive spectrum of fundamental expressive possibilities unfolds in the light of the cleverly chosen ten thematic focuses, including colour, material, form/shapes, realities, history(ies), natural and living spaces, great emotions and, finally, faces. In total, more than 150 works are presented, ranging from Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger and Paul Klee to Louise Bourgeois, Sean Scully, Bruce Nauman, Niki de Saint Phalle and Gerhard Richter to Marlene Dumas, Andrea Fraser, Julian Charrière, Julius von Bismarck, Christoph Girardet and Julia Schmid.
