When you accompany an artist's work over so many years, it becomes particularly close to your heart - indeed, you are happy about the success. And Georg Herold really has experienced many successful and glamorous moments, honours and presentations. Now, after celebrating his 70th birthday in July 2017, he can therefore look back on an impressive career and calmly organise a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Today, he is regarded as one of the defining figures of the last 30 years in international art, partly because his work is characterised by an exuberant love of experimentation. The fact that he uses simple materials, as has often been discussed in terms of reception, that his work is full of ironic moments, that his work constantly questions traditional forms of visual representation and in particular sculpture as such, is all true, but it should not obscure the view of a unique development in his work, whose essential leap from the concepts of postmodernism led to a modern artistic work freed from all convention and, associated with this, absolute sculptural independence!
