A book full of sea creatures

The story is told almost as simply as the specific motives presented in this book. It was 30 years ago that Gerhard Winkler had a pivotal moment in his life. During a stroll through the market hall in Lisbon, the artist could no longer tear himself away from the sight and beauty of the fish on offer there: sardines, sea pike and garfish, tuna and squid and many more species, all in abundance, some stored on ice, some lined up by type on metal stands. Customers were to be attracted by the aesthetic appearance of the display - and he succeeded. But there was more. He took a closer look and discovered the beauty and individuality of the fish for himself. Winkler primarily uses black and white film, the negatives of which provide the basis for his handmade baryta prints, which are then hand-coloured with protein glaze dyes to match the real appearance of the animals. Gerhard Winkler enriches contemporary photography with this individual artistic method, which takes up historically proven procedures - the type of colouring also goes back to methods of photographic post-processing in the 19th century. Each of his fish and cephalopods is presented with such mastery and emphasised individuality that they all appear enchanting, enigmatic and undisguised.
