Jürgen Partenheimer, the "poet of subtle nuances, delicate lines and tones"

Jürgen Partenheimer (born 1947 in Munich) has become known for his lyrical intensity, which is combined with the constructive elements of minimal art. More than 20 years ago, "Die Zeit" saw him as a literary traveller and called him a "poet of subtle nuances, of delicate lines and tones". He has taken part in the biennials in Paris, Venice and São Paulo and has had solo exhibitions in major museums around the world. With his solitary and elegant porcelain vases, he once again made the Mies van der Rohe Haus in Berlin a special venue, and in 2014 he was invited to the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, the Deichtorhallen/Falckenberg Collection, Hamburg-Harburg, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, with individual groups of works on thematic aspects. White Cube in London is now dedicating a major retrospective show to him, including in the gallery's spectacular 9 x 9 x 9 metre cube, with works from the last two years in combination with works from the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to paintings and drawings, a version of the painted bronze sculpture "Axis Mundi" can also be seen, which consists of different stacked chess elements painted in various shades of blue. The fragility of the works, which stems from the stroke, explicitly stands for their symbolic nature, but also for the artistic approach of surveying and mapping the constantly redefinable free space of art and its practice with critical awareness. What makes this volume particularly valuable is the reprinting of many historically important texts that are no longer available, such as those by Jan Hoet and Rudi Fuchs or conversations with Jan Thorn-Prikker and Alexander Kluge. This book celebrates Jürgen Partenheimer as an important contemporary artist who has always remained true to his goal of being a representative of subjective abstraction.
