Art, an emotional affair

In 2015, Martin Creed realised a wide-ranging selection of site-specific installations in the six large halls of the Kunsthalle Vogelmann for the Kunstverein Heilbronn; the following year, he also created a presentation at the Taxispalais in Innsbruck that was tailored to the local conditions. Both exhibitions were premieres for Germany and Austria. Martin Creed has not committed himself to any one medium in his work; he produces videos, paintings, sculptures or works made of neon, he makes music and stages ballet performances. The spatial environment always plays an important role. In 2001, the London-based Scottish artist was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize for a work that "only" consisted of regularly switching the light on and off in a room. At first glance, this seems very minimalist, but it is highly relevant for the entire room and the visitors who move around in it. Martin Creed's brilliant work appears playful and surprisingly friendly on the one hand, but is decisive and rigorous on the other. In a very personal interview, Martin Creed was asked why he makes art. His answer was: to feel better. This statement is as disarming as it is open-hearted and always invites the viewer of his work to participate in the process of engaging with art, with space and with the world in general.
