Over the course of more than three years, Patricia Bucher created the imposing 360° panorama of a perpetual battle running through the centuries. The young Swiss artist has been awarded the renowned Manor Kunstpreis for it and is showing her work, 30 metres long and 60 cm high, drawn and coloured on the computer, in a rotunda some 10 metres in diameter at the Kunstmuseum Luzern. From more than 2,000 depictions of war in painting, drawing and reportage, in computer games and comics, she has generated a unique, mutually overflowing mêlée in which the most diverse ethnicities, fighting styles and weaponry from every century collide. Panorama pictures have a history in Luzern, the city with an art museum on whose doorstep the unique Alpine panorama rises above the Vierwaldstättersee and where, with the Bourbaki Panorama and the Gornergrat Diorama in the Alpineum, there are already visitor magnets. Yet whereas there the main attention is devoted above all to the landscape, Patricia Bucher’s picture, in a uniquely engulfing movement, causes the history of humankind to congeal into a perpetual history of armed conflict.
