What happens when musicians orientate themselves on ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of images are created when painters allow themselves to be influenced by music? Being interested in the lives of others, pursuing the unknown, copying it, incorporating it into one's own work and using it - in short, cross-mapping between the worlds of music and the visual arts - is what the exhibition curated by ex-Spex and Electronic Beats editor-in-chief Max Dax and the catalogue HYPER! A JOURNEY INTO ART AND MUSIC. The book brings together classics such as Peter Saville's groundbreaking album cover for the New Order masterpiece "Power, Corruption and Lies" from 1983, Emil Schult's narrative-minimalist images that formed the basis for Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" cover from 1974 and Cyprien Gaillard's celebrated 3D installation "Night Life" from 2015. The influence of Richard Wagner on the work of performance artist Christoph Schlingensief, who died in 2010, is also explored, as is Alexander Kluge's specially composed minute opera. The reciprocal influences between music and art are illuminated using the examples of Albert Oehlen and Scooter, Thomas Scheibitz and the Melvins as well as Daniel Blumberg or photo and video works by Andrea Stappert, Sven Marquardt and Andreas Gursky; works by The KLF, Mark Leckey and Bettina Pousttchi expand the approach into the documentary. The narrative of the book is held together by a large number of background interviews that Max Dax has conducted with the protagonists of HYPER! over the past 30 years.
The HYPER! exhibition in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg will be accompanied by music presentations by Rosemarie Trockel and Thea Djordjaze, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Albert Oehlen, among others, as part of the "International Music Festival Hamburg" (from 27 April-29 May 2019) in the Elbphilharmonie. In total, over 40 international artists and musicians are taking part in this programme at the interface between art and music.
