In current art, and in photography in particular, the portrait remains one of the most important and continually reinvented pictorial subjects. The aesthetic approaches range from the documentary to the staged, from the reformulation of iconographic pictorial traditions to the artistic engagement with aspects of amateur photography or abstraction as possible reflections on the theme. With this joint exhibition project, the Kunstmuseum Bonn and Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Köln approach this complexity and topicality. And it can already be asserted: if fifteen years ago a book such as “How you look at it?” drew the definitive line under the question of the formal kinship between the visual arts and photography, thereby contributing to an enormous appreciation of photography, then for our present day „Mit anderen Augen“ provides a broad stocktaking and definitive confirmation of the predominance of photography in the artistic genre of the portrait – a predominance that can no longer be disputed.
