From Hannover to the Mont Ventoux! With Christian Ratschlag as the Sprengel Prize winner for 2023, the SPRENGEL PREIS consistently pursues the new direction it has taken since 2021. Initiated in 1979 by Bernhard and Margrit Sprengel and taken over in 1991 by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung, the SPRENGEL PREIS has since 2021 been jointly supported and organised by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK). Its reorientation involved not only a marked increase in funding, but above all the linking of the prize with a travel grant within Europe and an exhibition at the Sprengel Museum Hannover accompanied by a catalogue. The intentional background to the award of this travel grant as part of the prize and exhibition concept – conceived in the awareness of a rich and long history of intensive cultural exchange between peoples – is the embedding of Lower Saxony in a Europe with its specific idea of a democratic and liberal social order.
