Eva Berendes works with painting as a medium in order to widen her field of production. She extends the medium into sculpture and into public space. With this artistic method she not only interrogates the means of producing images but also skilfully manages to bring their basis into a dialogue with architecture, urban infrastructure or everyday objects. To this end she uses, as in the case of the present artist’s book, various fabrics, painted and untreated, which she then cuts, joins together by sewing them roughly or drapes one over another and fixes with pins. Such combinations by Eva Berendes could already be seen as objects in front of the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, when she received the Bonner Kunstpreis in 2021 and staged her works, indoors and out, like architectural fragments or sections of façade. There is something fluid about this, even though the materials involved are solid. They can, however, be subjected to manifold transformations, so that their sense and their formal character may be lost to them – and then the objects take flight!
