Catalogue of the Works

Since the early 1980s, Thomas Schütte - three-time participant in the documenta in Kassel, winner of the Düsseldorf Art Prize 2010 and the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale 2005 as best individual artist - has worked on architectural models, views and figurative scenes. Provided with scale indications or accompanied by small figures, they stand in relation to a realisation in larger dimensions, and so over the years many original small models have been translated into a large scale. The interplay between small and large, between model and realisation, between art as model and model as art runs through the entire oeuvre. This voluminous volume on the exhibition in Bonn was therefore inspired by Thomas Schütte himself and has been defined down to the last detail. There is hardly an important group of works that is missing as a model or installation in this chronological overview of thirty years of work. Here, the model is not only the nucleus of a fantastic and exuberant oeuvre, it also takes on a seismographic function and rediscovers the art of building for the visual arts.
