Since the early 1980s Thomas Schütte – three-time participant in the documenta in Kassel, winner of the Düsseldorf Art Prize in 2010 and of the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale in 2005 as best individual artist – has worked on architectural models, views and figurative scenes. Provided with indications of scale or accompanied by small figures, they stand in relation to an execution in larger dimensions, and so over the years many originally small models have been realised on a large scale. The play between small and large, between model and realisation, between art as model and model as art runs through the entire oeuvre. This substantial volume accompanying the show in Bonn was therefore initiated by Thomas Schütte himself and determined by him down to the last detail. There is thus hardly an important group of works that is missing, as model or installation, from this chronologically ordered survey of thirty years. Here the model is not only the nucleus of a fantastic and exuberant oeuvre; rather, it takes on seismographic functions and rediscovers the art of building for the visual arts.
