Andreas Karl Schulze paints with the eye, with the activation of the gaze. His expressive possibilities are unimaginably diverse, from pointed aperçu to festive breadth, from controlled precision to expressive dynamism and from intuitive rhythm to Dadaist babble of voices. However, his works are never limited to the conceptual; they are always expressed in the visible. Contrary to first appearances, they are rarely austere, but always emotional - filled with musical, dance-like, thoughtful, surprising, accelerating and ultimately barely comprehensible movement. Understanding them is actually quite easy; it is enough to see what is visible. However, Andreas Karl Schulze's works do not present anything that is already known. They make visible what Willi Baumeister described as the 'unknown in art' - 'something that only becomes visible through painting and was not there before, belonged to the unknown'. Concentrating on the visible does not mean a limitation, but rather an inconclusive expansion of what can be recognised ... All of Andreas Karl Schulze's works enter into a unity with the surrounding real space - a unity of the different. In the urban space of Lippstadt, the artist has created pictorial constellations of six coloured squares on a number of buildings - mostly in inconspicuous corners. The viewer's gaze renews itself to what is actually before its eyes, adjusting to the distances and colour references, which also incorporate the elements of the surrounding reality into this visual interplay of relationships. They participate in the rhythms, accentuations, tensions, in the far-reaching visual surprises and discoveries. Something 'unknown' emerges. The real is not only the carrier of a work of art and its emotional processes, but a necessary and precious component of it. At one point or another, a quiet and intense visual poetry emerges in a corner of everyday life." (Excerpt from the accompanying text by Erich Franz)
