Really big! Sixty metres long, that is, and 40 centimetres high is the wall frieze P SYSYPP S YP P spanning three sides of the room in the library for psychology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. The coloured cotton squares applied to the wall, out of which the letters are formed, have an edge length of five centimetres – with some of them standing on their heads. Seeing thus quickly turns into reading, which however fails, and so reading turns back into seeing, because the letters tend to disintegrate again and again into the independent fields of colour of which they consist. Viewers therefore experience the continual disintegration and the continual emergence of a form. Nothing can be pinned down: chance and spatial reference are the methodical factors of an installation principle that counteracts the customary modes of access – reading, logic, explanation and prognosis. In this way the static and optically heavy spatial structure of the library, with its rows of shelves and coloured book spines, can be met with a light roaming that plays with variants of meaning and that, on a high level of dynamic complexity, glides over from pure thought into an inner emotional being-moved. And this happens almost incidentally, without one becoming aware of it!
