Über dieses Buch

The streets of Berlin

Arno Fischer (1927-2011) occupies an important place in 20th century German photography. Throughout his career, he worked in a wide variety of photographic genres: he showed fashion in the streets of Eastern European cities, but also photographed ordinary citizens of the Eastern Bloc and their everyday lives. His travels took him to Equatorial Guinea, India, the Soviet Union and the United States, where he naturally always had his camera with him. When he wasn't roaming the streets with it, he was an active member of DIREKT, a group of photographers - founded in East Berlin in 1965 - who made a significant contribution to the differentiation of East Germany's visual culture in the 1970s and 1980s. Arno Fischer and his wife, the photographer Sibylle Bergemann, also cultivated contacts with the international photography scene. Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson and René Burri were always happy to pay a flying visit to their flat on Schiffbauerdamm. Arno Fischer was also a passionate lecturer, first at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig and then, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie und Gestaltung in Berlin, where he engaged in intensive dialogue with students.
