Günther FörgGazzetta dello Sport

For the “cultivated” and yet “fanatical” football fan in Italy, proof of the existence of God was furnished more than 25 years ago by the “Gazzetta dello Sport,” which for almost 120 years has appeared daily on pink newsprint: “Maradonna = God” ran a headline at the time, when Argentina became world champions against Germany. It may well have been snapshots of this kind that tempted Günther Förg to rework the essentially cheap source material of pink-printed newspaper. In this way a self-contained series came into being in 2006, comprising four large-format works (2.10 x 3 metres), six medium-sized ones (1 x 1.50 metres) and 64 small ones (53 x 76 cm each) in acrylic, which play over the newspaper columns in free forms. Grid motifs reinforce and hold together the superimposition on the pink original, and thus Günther Förg brought one of his fantastic pictorial motifs to a head in an entirely new way.
