Astrid Nippoldt, Hansjoerg DobliarIt’s always night, or we wouldn’t need light

Welcome to the dark side … The double presentation at the Villa Merkel in Esslingen of film works by Astrid Nippoldt together with painterly installations by Hansjoerg Dobliar shows two positions that complement one another ideally, for, in the succession of Romantic traditions, both shake the limits of the rational availability of the image: the position of Hansjoerg Dobliar, because he harnesses his large overpaintings of magazine photographs into sombrely coloured constructions and, with these seemingly crystalline structures, forms spaces of cosmic effect. The position of Astrid Nippoldt, because she steers filmic pictorial spaces that tell of meaning and power into a state of imbalance through tragicomic incidents, one in which the absurdity of existence is consistently reflected. Illustrated throughout with installation views, the book is accordingly conceived with a view to this particular spatial effect in the work of the two artists.
