Borden CapalinoWorks 2013–2015

Of course you come across bizarre stuff! At the beginning of Borden Capalino’s works, which might also be described as a kind of forensic surrealism, stands a process of collecting: images from the website craigslist.com are gathered, sorted and archived by him. He then selects pictures according to formal criteria, alters them, cuts them up and reassembles them by ironing them onto canvas. Capalino also applies the most varied materials, deliberately avoiding art supply shops, for he finds his material in supermarkets, household goods stores, pharmacies and pet shops. The result is a disconcerting combination of photography and sculpture: the artist removes parts of the photographs, but in return supplements them with materials such as tar, coffee, iodine, dried-up food or worms, which he arranges in clear symmetries. Ultimately he develops a kind of decorative archaeology, as though he wanted to make dead surfaces dance.
