Daniel Kehlmann, the most internationally successful German author of the 2000s with his novel "Measuring the World" (2006), writes in this elegant little book about Cecily Brown's latest pictures: "It can also be put more soberly: Cecily Brown's art shows how superficial and uninteresting the apparent contrast between object and abstraction is. After all, constructivism is right about one thing: we ourselves assemble a mobile, fragile model from a jumble of impressions according to our own not exactly reliable rules. We don't just look at our surroundings, we move through them, so our external world is constantly falling apart, rearranging itself anew and always differently, and only the constant work of our consciousness gives us the appearance of constancy. Cecily Brown does not alienate the world, she paints it as it actually is, a play of colour and shadow."
