Christa Dichgans – Female Pop Art! Plastic toys piled up in a child’s bedroom, an inflatable animal as a swimming ring, Batman and mountains of sausage – these are the motifs that characterise the paintings of Christa Dichgans (b. 1940 in Berlin). The artist, who became known above all for her early work of the 1960s and has recently attracted considerable attention through her participation in various national and international group exhibitions, is unquestionably one of the most important protagonists of Pop Art. For more than five decades she has been working over the relationship between people and objects, always in the context of an interrogation of mass consumption, which has of course changed greatly over time: instead of quality and quantity, immaterial attributions have increasingly come to the fore, finding expression in the symbolic content of goods and, correspondingly, in the brand awareness of consumers. Accordingly, Christa Dichgans’s motifs also recall vanitas still lifes, pointing to the ever-shortening half-life of the world of things in an accelerated culture.
