With Christian Ratschlag as the 2023 Sprengel Prize winner, the SPRENGEL PRIZE is consistently pursuing the new direction it has taken since 2021. Initiated in 1979 by Bernhard and Margrit Sprengel and sponsored by Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung since 1991, the SPRENGEL PRIZE has been jointly supported and organised by Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) since 2021. Its reorientation was not only associated with a significant increase in funding, but above all the linking of the prize with a travel grant within Europe and an exhibition at the Sprengel Museum Hannover with a catalogue. The intentional background for the awarding of the travel grant as part of the prize and exhibition concept is the embedding of Lower Saxony in a Europe with its specific idea of a democratic and free social order, in awareness of a rich and long history of intensive cultural exchange between the nations.
