Photography as an artistic medium. At the beginning of the 1990s photography tentatively began to establish itself as a material in art and on the art market, but was still far from having risen to the rank of an autonomous artistic genre. Today it is among the most versatile points of departure to be found in artistic practice. At the same time, at the zenith of its ascent, the question arises how much longer photography will be employed as an (autonomous) procedure in art. Digitisation has almost entirely displaced analogue techniques. And with the fundamental changes in technical approaches, the way photography is handled is changing as well. Alongside Christina Leber’s text on the history of the DZ BANK art collection on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, five essays in this richly illustrated volume examine and newly situate the relationship of photography to the other artistic genres: to painting, to drawing and sculpture, to the moving image and to Conceptual art. For it is time to push open the window, beyond the purely documentary function of photography in art that has been pressed in recent years, and once again to focus attention on the possibilities of this medium as art.
