Sculptural independence! When one has accompanied an artist’s work over so many years, it becomes especially dear to one’s heart – indeed, one takes pleasure in his success. And Georg Herold has truly experienced many successful and glamorous moments, honours and presentations. Now, having celebrated his seventieth birthday in July 2017, he can look back on an impressive career and, with a steady hand, mount a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Today he is regarded as one of the formative figures of the past thirty years in international art, not least because his work stands for an exuberant delight in experimentation. That he uses simple materials, as has often been rehearsed at length in the reception of his work, that his œuvre is full of ironic moments, that with his work he constantly calls into question traditional forms of pictorial representation and of sculpture in particular – all of this is true, yet it should not obscure the view of a singular development of an œuvre whose essential leap led out of the conceptual apparatus of postmodernism into a modern artistic body of work freed from every convention and, bound up with this, into absolute sculptural independence!
