When Günther Förg’s 50th birthday was celebrated, his friends, with Reiner Speck as the initiating editor, agreed on a book which, through the contribution of 50 watercolours by Günther Förg himself, became an artists’ book. Whether sensitively, as Rudi Fuchs takes the measure of a watercolour; with a long art-historical breath, as Siegfried Gohr addresses the window motif; in a cheerful underground manner, as Rudolf Schmitz intones a poem; or at a grand narrative pace, as Johannes Gachnang leans out of the window on a warm Milanese summer night – the result was always a profound rapprochement between friends, founded upon great and penetrating expertise. Almost cheerful by comparison were the watercolours, the first indications in Günther Förg’s work that he knew how to hold his own between Eros and Thanatos, when, with lightly breathed dabs of colour, he now dressed and now undressed women as sleeping, bathing or posing figures.
