As already in the volume “Gazzetta dello Sport,” in a further book of 2006 Günther Förg again devoted a group of water colours to a particular theme. Here it was a selection of landscape paintings of the late nineteenth century from a small yet exquisite collection in Baden, around which he built up a group of somewhat more than 80 watercolours. In this sequence, produced at great speed, Günther Förg surprises us with his distinctive approach: the way he tackles landscape, it can only attain validity in a form of abstraction. Leafing through the book, which is interrupted every so often by one of the „models“, one very quickly sees in the rhythm of Günther Förg’s pictures how far his abstract painting at that time remained, in painterly terms, ahead of new figurative conceptions.
