No Walk, No Art
Hamish Fulton, born in London in 1946, works on a completely independent oeuvre that is full of poetry and characterised by a distinctive, authentic and cosmopolitan attitude. For more than 40 years, he has been transforming and labelling "walking" as an art form: Walks. Fulton undertakes walks on all continents, which he calls "From Coast to Coast" in Great Britain, for example. The results are wall drawings and paintings, photographs and objects in which the defining phenomena of the walks are captured in a variety of ways. At the same time, according to the motto "No Walk, no Art", these can also be read as a passive protest against the excesses of urbanisation, which Fulton formulates sympathetically but uncompromisingly. In 1994, Hamish Fulton also directly involved other people in his work for the first time with a Group Walk. This volume documents the nucleus of the exhibition at the Villa Merkel in Esslingen, the artist's walks recorded in India and Tibet in recent years.
