Alexander Schröder is a collector by passion, and the catalogue accompanying “IN.SIGHT – Die Schenkung Schröder” (donation Schröder) comprehensively publishes the 60 works by more than 20 artists that Alexander Schröder recently donated to the Hamburger Kunsthalle. This donation counts as one of the most extensive in the history of the Galerie der Gegenwart. Alexander Schröder (*1968) grew up in Hamburg and founded the gallery NEU in Berlin in 1994. The works in his collection provide an outstanding survey of artistic positions from the 1970s to the immediate present. In doing so they lay open ways of seeing and specifically question existing norms with regard to social spaces, architecture, institutions, gender, identity, sexuality, migration, nationhood and racism. What is particularly striking is that Alexander Schröder has directed his view of contemporary art far beyond the artists represented by NEU and follows entirely a passion of social relevance.
