"In the Heart of Another Country" explores the concept of home as a feeling of longing and belonging for artists from various diaspora groups. The exhibition and book are dedicated to the question of how physical movement - mobility across national borders - shaped the framework conditions of international contemporary art. On their migration routes, the artists travelled through South and West Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Today, most of them live scattered all over the world and far away from the places to which they originally felt they belonged. Featuring 150 artworks from the international collection of the Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, "In the Heart of Another Country" presents the work of more than 60 artists from all artistic disciplines. Many of these works have rarely or never been exhibited outside of their original context. The exhibits range from newly restored installations to recent acquisitions linked by a common narrative of belonging - often against a backdrop of political unrest and social conflict. "In the Heart of Another Country" epitomises the Sharjah Art Foundation's aim to use its collection to showcase art that postulates East-East and South-South alliances, bringing them together at a point of intersection to create a fertile foundation for a polyphonic and inclusive art history.
