Katharina HinsbergSequence: Drawings 1–117

The artistic work of Katharina Hinsberg (*1967; professor at the HbK Saarbrücken) concentrates on a multi-layered engagement with the genre of drawing and with its historical, technical and spatial contexts. A procedure typical of her is the cut into the picture support, or the cutting out of drawn lines. With the artist’s book “Sequence – Drawings 1–117” Katharina Hinsberg presents for the first time a series of permutatively conceived colour drawings made with 117 coloured pencils in horizontal rows on a grid. With each new sheet a further colour is added, grows, is reduced or disappears again, the dense coloured hatching of the rows being closely bound to the movement of the hand. With no space left between them, strokes and rows become coloured fields that fill the surface, continuing and changing from sheet to sheet. The fixed grid consists of 23 fields across and 30 rows down, each field 5 x 5 mm. Katharina Hinsberg begins her sequence with black and ends in white.
