Mathilde RosierCeremonially Infused

The French artist Mathilde Rosier creates atmospherically highly charged spatial situations that spring from her interest in the physical and psychological experiences of ancient rites and rituals. To this end she combines painting with sculptural assemblages and films. With constantly recurring motifs such as the bed or the cat, placeholders for psychic thresholds that have been crossed, these idiosyncratically constructed spaces conjure up a journey between the conscious and the unconscious. Mathilde Rosier’s installations owe their influences as much to the practices of Freudian psychologists as to the film „Les Maîtres Fous“ or to the excavations of the pharaohs’ tombs. This book is her first independent publication and conveys an impression of Mathilde Rosier’s extensive work as a draughtswoman, which she uses as the basis for her environments. The book combines drawings with texts and thus allows direct access to the artist’s mental world. Photographs of the environments as Mathilde Rosier installed them at the Kunstpalais Erlangen during the exhibition between April and June 2011 show an intense interplay of the various materials.
