The aesthetic potential of things

This catalogue presents the first comprehensive exhibition of works by the German artist Meuser (*1947), who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1968 to 1972, took part in documenta IX in 1992 and became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in the same year. Found objects usually form the source material for Meuser's sculptures, wall objects, paintings and sculptural works. Meuser works on solid construction elements such as T-beams, gratings, shelving systems and metal plates with intense, predominantly monochrome coats of paint and arranges individual objects in compositions that are as well thought out as they are seemingly incidental. Meuser's works explore the aesthetic potential of things beyond their function as well as the symbolic nature of industrially produced forms without being figurative. The catalogue brings together works from the late 1970s to the present day, including numerous pieces from international collections. In close collaboration with the artist, these are presented in installation shots in relation to the special architectural conditions of the Kunsthalle. The catalogue is the first comprehensive individual presentation in years.
