No artist of the twentieth century enjoys such attention in the public eye as Pablo Picasso; with no other is the formal and expressive power of the works accorded such attention; none draws such crowds of visitors into the museums. And since 1912 – since “Hommage à Picasso,” Juan Gris’s Cubist portrait of Picasso – Pablo Picasso’s work has been a challenge and a spur to a great many artists. For generations “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907) or “Guernica” (1937) have been reworked, giving rise to the most varied appropriations, no matter what approaches the artists concerned may otherwise have pursued. It is the seemingly inexhaustible power of imagination and the range within Picasso’s work that – between abstraction and figure, artistic creativity and politically intended statement – challenge artists to ever new and tension-filled dialogues. The voluminous book is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name marking the reopening of the renovated Nordhalle, with which the 25th exhibition anniversary of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg reaches its climax.
