"I don't make any rules"

An automatic lawnmower rings a little bell, a balloon drags a track through the sand, a boat moves on barrels. In Roman Signer's (*1938 in Appenzell) work, everything is in motion - without rules, one might ask, as his statement insinuates? No, the artist rather understands sculpture as a processual description of a state and thus adds a fourth dimension to the usual three dimensions of objects: time. A circumstance that has earned his works the term "time sculpture". He often uses explosives, water or movement as a means of operation, so that he can also direct the experience of his artworks towards the experience of physical violence and speed. Such a way of working naturally generates great viewer interest, because it always reminds us a little of the exciting and crackling archaic power that seems to be inherent in this anarcho-lab, and which we love above all because it can rumble and crash violently. Roman Signer's works have long since found a prominent place in the international scene, for example at the 1987 documenta, the 1997 Skulptur Projekte Münster and the 2000 Expo in Hanover, and most recently in 2010 in the Herrnhäuser Gärten. The exhibition at the Kestnergesellschaft thus presents a well-known artist and his very latest works, which once again delight us with the poetry inherent in things and the grotesque in everyday life in this volume accompanying a remarkable exhibition.
